Halahal

Cast: Barun Sobti, Sachin Khedekar, Manu Rishi Chadha
Director: Randeep Jha
Genre: Crime, Mystery, Thriller
Play time: 01:36:00
release Year: 2020

Synopsis:

Sachin Khedekar is literally standing in front of a burning effigy watching black ash float into the evening sky while looking like his entire world has just completely collapsed right in front of him and he can't even process a single thought.

Okay so Halahal starts with this terrifying premise where a medical student is found dead and everyone calls it a suicide but her father refuses to believe it because he knows his daughter and she just wouldn't do that.

Sachin Khedekar plays the grieving dad Dr. Shiv Kumar Sharma and honestly his performance is just exhausting to watch because he's constantly sweating and running around government offices trying to get someone to look at a piece of paper.

Enter Barun Sobti who plays this shady local cop Yusuf and he wears these sunglasses and drives around in a jeep while smoking cigarettes and acting like he owns the entire town and at first you're just waiting for him to take a bribe and make things worse.

The medical entrance exam scam in the plot is based on real events in India which makes the whole thing feel extra dark and creepy and you're watching it thinking about how messed up the system is while also trying to figure out who to trust.

And then boom out of nowhere we hit the interval block right when the tension is peaking and Shiv gets attacked in a dimly lit alleyway and seriously why do bollywood movies always cut to intermission during the absolute worst possible moments.

Let's talk about that one random background extra in the police station scene who is wearing this violently bright yellow sweater that looks like it's from the nineties and honestly I couldn't stop staring at it for a solid three minutes while serious dialogue was happening about corpses and bribes and forged documents.

Stuff happens and Shiv teams up with Barun Sobti's character Yusuf and they form this totally weird dynamic where the desperate dad and the corrupt cop go rogue to hunt down the powerful syndicate bosses behind the Vyapam style scam.

Manu Rishi Chadha shows up as this slimy politician type and he's just great at playing characters you want to punch through your laptop screen.

They chase leads across dusty highways and shady clinics and someone yells tu nahi samjhega and then they get closer to the truth which means bodies start dropping left and right without any warning.

Hindi movies love a good conspiracy and this one doesn't hold back on the grit and dirt.

Shiv finds the actual hard evidence proving his daughter was murdered because she was going to expose the whole cheating racket.

Yusuf gets cornered and shot during a chaotic shootout in an abandoned warehouse.

Shiv stares blankly at the flash drive containing the truth while police sirens wail in the distance and the screen just cuts straight to black.

The direction skillfully balances tension and drama, keeping viewers engaged from start to finish. The cinematography complements the narrative, with visuals that reflect the gritty realism of the story. The screenplay is tightly woven, ensuring that each scene contributes meaningfully to character development and plot progression.

Themes of justice, morality, and personal sacrifice are explored with sensitivity, prompting viewers to reflect on their own beliefs and society's flaws. The film's pacing is commendable, allowing for moments of intensity while also providing necessary pauses for character introspection.

Overall, this movie stands out as a thought-provoking piece that challenges perceptions and stimulates discussion. It is a must-watch for those who appreciate stories that delve into the complexities of human nature and societal issues.
