Synopsis:

It is an action thriller centered on the rise of Deepak, also known as Maalik, in the ruthless underworld. The film is set in the 1990s Allahabad and captures the gritty milieu of the sand mafia and its political nexus. Rajkummar Rao plays the titular role of Deepak, a feared sand mafia don who manipulates tenders and people with ease. The plot unfolds as Deepak’s reign faces a challenge from a rival gangster and the arrival of Officer Prabhu Das (played by Prosenjit Chatterjee), a determined cop on a mission to cleanse the city. The story also involves political intrigue through characters like Minister Shankar Singh, a veteran politician connected to Deepak's past.

The film attempts to blend a gangster epic with elements of redemption, political thriller, and crime drama, highlighting the social issues entwined with crime and power struggles. However, critical reception notes that while the initial setup is promising and atmospheric, the narrative becomes muddled and inconsistent, lacking the intensity and coherence of similar gangster dramas. The screenplay jumps awkwardly between scenes, diluting the impact of key moments, and some elements feel like imitations rather than organic storytelling.

Movie Review:

This film delivers a gripping narrative centered on the complex relationship between faith, power, and justice. Rajkummar Rao shines in a role that demands intense emotional depth, portraying a character caught between personal conviction and societal challenges. His performance is both nuanced and compelling, drawing the audience into his internal conflicts and struggles.

Manushi Chhillar makes a strong debut, bringing freshness and sincerity to her role. Her portrayal adds layers to the story, balancing vulnerability with determination. The supporting cast, including Saurabh Shukla and Prosenjit Chatterjee, provides solid performances that enrich the storyline without overshadowing the leads.

The direction skillfully navigates the film’s heavy themes, such as religious influence and political corruption, without becoming preachy. The screenplay is tight, maintaining a steady pace that keeps viewers engaged throughout. Cinematography captures the contrasting moods effectively—from tense, dramatic moments to quieter, introspective scenes.

The music score complements the film’s tone well, enhancing emotional beats without overwhelming the narrative. The dialogues are impactful, often highlighting the moral dilemmas faced by the characters.

While the film addresses sensitive issues, it manages to do so with respect and thoughtfulness, provoking reflection rather than controversy. Some sequences may feel intense for certain viewers due to the subject matter and dramatic tension, but they serve the story’s purpose.

Overall, this movie stands out as a bold and meaningful work that challenges viewers to think critically about authority and belief systems in society. It is a commendable effort with strong performances and a compelling storyline that lingers long after the credits roll.
