Synopsis:
Look, Scam 1992 S01 is this massive streaming hit that completely blew up the usual formula for how we look at true crime in India, and honestly, if you haven't watched it yet, you're missing out on some of the wildest financial chaos ever put on a screen, which is wild because it's based on a real guy named Harshad Mehta who figured out how to completely game the Bombay Stock Exchange back in the late eighties and early nineties.
Harshad starts out as this absolute nobody working low-level jobs, but he's got big dreams, and he's obsessed with the stock market, so he teams up with his brother Ashwin, and they start dabbling in shares while dealing with snooty brokers who treat them like trash because they don't come from old money, but Harshad has this insane swagger and he refuses to stay down.
Pratik Gandhi plays him with this terrifyingly good energy, chewing up every single scene, and speaking of the acting, Shreya Dhanwanthary plays Sucheta Dalal, the fearless financial journalist who just smells corruption from a mile away and won't let go of the story, no matter how many times powerful men try to shut her up.
And then we hit the interval block right when Harshad is literally buying a fleet of imported Toyota Corolla cars just to flex on his haters, because why not flex when you're the undisputed Amitabh Bachchan of the stock market and everyone is chanting your name like you're a rockstar in a packed stadium?
Stuff happens so fast after that point, like seriously, he figures out this loophole called the Ready Forward deal where he borrows cheap money from banks that have surplus cash and funnels it straight into stocks to pump up the prices to astronomical levels, and his office is just buzzing with so much nervous excitement that you can practically smell the cheap chai and expensive sweat.
Anjali Barot plays Jyoti Mehta, Harshad's supportive wife who just stands around looking mildly concerned in these gorgeous traditional sarees while her husband accidentally tanks the entire Indian banking system, and let me tell you, there's this one specific background extra wearing a mustard yellow knitted sweater in the brokerage office scenes who never blinks, and once you notice him, you literally cannot look away from his unblinking eyes for the rest of the episode.
And then boom, the scam gets exposed because Sucheta teams up with fellow journalist Debashis Basu and they publish the explosive article in The Times of India revealing that Harshad is financing his massive stock purchases with fake bank receipts called BRs.
The whole house of cards collapses instantly, banks start panicking, politicians who were taking bribes from him suddenly pretend they've never even met the guy, and Harshad tries to hold a massive press conference to prove his innocence where he drops that legendary real-life quote about paying a crore to prime minister P.V. Narasimha Rao, which basically seals his doom forever.
We watch hindi movies and bollywood movies all the time for fictional drama, but this series based on real life feels crazier than any fiction because the greed was just out of this world.
Harshad spends his final days running around courtrooms trying to fight off dozens of criminal charges and tax evasion cases, looking exhausted and broken compared to the shiny arrogant broker he used to be, until he finally suffers a massive heart attack while sitting inside Thane jail and dies behind bars.
The series is a gripping exploration of ambition, greed, and the darker side of the financial world. Pratik Gandhi delivers a standout performance, fully embodying the complexities of his character with charisma and depth.
