Vinayakan is literally smashing a wooden chair across a dusty interrogation table while Mammootty just sits there calmly drinking lukewarm chai from a cracked glass like nothing's even happening.

Honestly, KalamKaval isn't even a typical entry in the usual ocean of bollywood movies or hindi films, because even though it's technically a Malayalam picture that cinephiles keep screaming about on Twitter, it hits you with the same over-the-top, loud, dramatic energy we usually expect from massive blockbuster hindi movies on a festival release weekend.

So we start in this dusty police station where Mammootty plays this worn-out, cynical cop who's seen way too much corruption, and Vinayakan is his chaotic, unpredictable foil who is screaming at suspects and sweating through his uniform shirt with these giant salt stains under his armpits that I couldn't stop staring at for twenty solid minutes.

Rajisha Vijayan shows up as this fierce, no-nonsense local activist who is trying to figure out why half the teenagers in the district are suddenly vanishing into thin air without a single trace left behind, and she bursts into the station yelling, "Where are the files?" right in the middle of a peaceful afternoon nap.

And then boom, we're flashing back to a completely unrelated village festival where everyone is dancing awkwardly in neon pink and green outfits that look like they were bought on sale at a local market, which is hilarious because it totally kills the dark, brooding thriller vibe they were building up.

Stuff happens really fast, like a random car chase through narrow alleyways where chickens are flying everywhere and the camera is shaking so much you'll feel slightly carsick, and then suddenly we hit the interval point right when Mammootty finds a bloody watch buried under a pile of rotting mangoes.

People are eating samosas in the lobby while trying to figure out if Vinayakan is actually the secret villain or if he's just really bad at his job, and honestly, the second half doesn't slow down for even a second.

Rajisha gets kidnapped by guys in a rusted jeep while buying vegetables, and Mammootty and Vinayakan have to stop fighting each other long enough to track her down through a sketchy rubber plantation in the pouring rain.

We get this massive, brutal climax where Mammootty corners the actual ringleader inside an abandoned brick kiln, and they have this long, messy, exhausting fistfight in the mud where nobody looks like a cool action hero and everyone just looks tired and desperate.

The villain pulls a knife, Vinayakan flies in out of nowhere with a flying kick that knocks them both into a stack of old tires, and Mammootty cuffs the guy to a rusted steel beam while the rain pours right through the broken roof.

Mammootty walks away into the gray morning fog without saying a single word, leaving Vinayakan to deal with the paperwork.
